Solange: The Ugly Duckling

The Knowles aren't known to have much family drama, but just last week video footage surfaced of Solange attacking Jay Z, her brother-in-law. The story has gone viral and has everyone wondering just what it was that caused Solange's outburst.

There are memes all over social media with funny captions claiming that the fight was over her choice to go natural. Some memes make fun of her being the ugly sister and the ugly duckling. Now, we will probably never know the real story, but it does bring up a point worth reviewing.

Remember the story of the Ugly Duckling? That poor duckling was teased by his siblings and began believing what they said was true. Everywhere he went he was reminded that he looked nothing like his siblings and that only made him feel worse.

It can't be easy being the little sister of Beyonce. How would you feel if your older sister was hailed as one of the most beautiful and intelligent women of today? She's on the cover of hundreds of magazines and her face is seen all over the internet and tv. Beyonce is so beautiful that Solange (or any other woman for that matter) is compared to her- her hair, her body, her smile and her voice- and thought not to be as pretty. Solange is constantly critized for her style choices and her hair.

Not only is she not as "beautiful" as her sister, but she has already been married and divorced and her career will probably never be as big as Beyonce's either. We all know that Jay Z and Beyonce are the epitome of 'black love' and their marriage has outlasted many of their celebrity peers.

So just imagine, here you are this gifted woman who has experienced a lot of life at a young age, but still, no matter what you do, you can never be as great as your sister. And you are reminded of that everyday, over and over again.

Now I am in no way declaring to know the feelings of Solange- I can only imagine.

People have been calling Solange The Ugly Duckling way before this elevator footage surfaced. No matter what she does to be her own person- she gets criticized. This reminds me of another sister-duo: Leah and Rachel. Leah was not as beautiful as Rachel and her eyes were so unattractive that it took away from any visible beauty she possessed. And to top it off Rachel was deeply loved by Jacob, so much so that Leah did whatever she could to earn the love her husband; she wanted to be accepted.

It seems like The Ugly Duckling syndrome existed way before the Knowles sisters. The truth is, Solange is a brave woman, who despite the critics, goes against the grain. She has her own style and doesn't apologize for it. She may not sell out stadiums or ever be voted one of the most beautiful women in the world, but her story will be a witness to anyone who feels like the outcast that they can rise above all the name calling and criticizing. Solange hasn't been sitting on her butt people. She has several albums out, is a fashion icon and has many accomplishments.

And by the way, it was Leah who Jacob was buried with in their family burial cave, not Rachel (says a lot huh). Oh, and that little ugly duckling...he turned into a swan!

I'd say Solange is a stronger person than the world may realize. And while people are making fun of her, it will be her story that outshines the rest;-)

So when you look at your reflection and feel less beautiful than your siblings, remember that God made you different and special. Don't compare yourself to anyone else. God made you you for a reason, don't forget that.

  1. I think she's a beautiful woman! And it's not the army of stylists that make you look beautiful! I think the hardest part about being her is that it's not just her who compares herself to her sister but half of the world too, unfortunately...

  2. I agree! I can't imagine how that would feel, but I would guess that it's a weight not many could bear!
